New year! New books!
Not sure who to go to for advice when you have issues concerning family and love? Well, you can always reach out to infamous conservative radio show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger for a helpful hand.
In the new graphic memoir Calling Dr. Laura (Mariner Books), artist Nicole Georges chronicles the stress of dealing with long kept family secrets, her coming out experience, and what can happen when you seek support from the most unlikely of sources.
From the publisher:
When Nicole Georges was two years old, her family told her that her father was dead. When she was twenty-three, a psychic told her he was alive. Her sister, saddled with guilt, admits that the psychic is right and that the whole family has conspired to keep him a secret. Sent into a tailspin about her identity, Nicole turns to radio talk-show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger for advice.
Packed cover-to-cover with heartfelt and disarming black-and-white illustrations, Calling Dr. Laura tells the story of what happens to you when you are raised in a family of secrets, and what happens to your brain (and heart) when you learn the truth from an unlikely source. Part coming-of-age and part coming-out story[…]
Columbia University Press is publishing a new novel by noted lesbian historian Lillian Faderman. Scotch Verdict: The Real-Life Story That Inspired “The Children’s Hour” is a thought-provoking retelling of the notorious “Pirie and Woods” libel case.
From Columbia University Press:
In 1810, a Scottish student named Jane Cumming accused her school mistresses, Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods, of having an affair in the presence of their students. Dame Cumming Gordon, the wealthy and powerful grandmother of the accusing student, advises her friends to remove their daughters from the Drumsheugh boarding school. Within days, the institution is deserted and two women are deprived of their livelihoods.
Award-winning author Lillian Faderman recreates the events surrounding this notorious case, which became the basis for Lillian Hellman’s famous play, The Children’s Hour. Reconstructing the libel suit filed by Pirie and Woods, which resulted in a scotch verdict, or a verdict of inconclusive/not proven[…]
This month, Sibling Rivalry Press is releasing The Talking Day by poet Michael Klein.
Fire Island, Bette Davis, reincarnation, the movies, Henry James, the Russian baths, being lonely in public, following strangers, washing a corpse, the FDR Drive and the racetrack all figure predominantly in Michael Klein’s The Talking Day – a talking book of poems that speak to the terrible beauty of the world we live in and the world we live without.
Also this month, expect new releases from mystery writer Karen Pullen, author Michael Rumaker, and novelist Philip Hensher.
As always, if we missed an author or book, or if you have a book coming out next month, please email us.
