In a 2006 issue of the comic book The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker’s beloved Aunt May – after finally discovering that her nephew was the masked superhero Spider-Man – told him that, for many years, she assumed Peter was not a superhero but was simply gay. Through all his teen years, she felt Peter was both secretive and sensitive, i.e., gay, gay, gay!
Actor Andrew Garfield, star of the newest film adaptation of The Amazing Spider Man, picks up on this theme and runs with it.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Andrew Garfield tells EW about a recent conversation with Amazing Spider-Man 2 producer Matt Tolmach. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” Garfield takes the “not joking” thing to the next level by nominating Michael B. Jordan, who Garfield’s been a fan of since The Wire. “He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better — we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
