Summer is here and so are a plethora of fantastic LGBTQ books.
Comic book geeks rejoice! Fantagraphics Books is releasing No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics edited by Justin Hall. This titanic omnibus collects some of the comic-book industry’s most celebrated artists.
From the publisher:
Queer cartooning encompasses some of the best and most interesting comics of the last four decades, with creators tackling complex issues of identity and a changing society with intelligence, humor, and imagination. This book celebrates this vibrant artistic underground by gathering together a collection of excellent stories that can be enjoyed by all.
No Straight Lines showcases major names such as Alison Bechdel (whose book Fun Home was named Time Magazine’s 2006 Book of the Year), Howard Cruse (whose groundbreaking Stuck Rubber Baby is now back in print), and Ralf Koenig (one of Europe’s most popular cartoonists), as well as high-profile, crossover creators who have flirted with the world of LGBTQ comics, like legendary NYC artist David Wojnarowicz and media darling and advice columnist Dan Savage.
Farrar, Straus and Giroux is releasing the much-buzzed-about All We Know, a new book from Lisa Cohen. The book is a dazzling “biographical triptych” about three very unique cultural figures:
Esther Murphy was a brilliant New York intellectual who dazzled friends and strangers with an unstoppable flow of conversation. But she never finished the books she was contracted to write—a painful failure and yet a kind of achievement.
The quintessential fan, Mercedes de Acosta had intimate friendships with the legendary actresses and dancers of the twentieth century. Her ephemeral legacy lies in the thousands of objects she collected to preserve the memory of those performers and to honor the feelings they inspired.
An icon of haute couture and a fashion editor of British Vogue, Madge Garland held bracing views on dress that drew on her feminism, her ideas about modernity, and her love of women. Existing both vividly and invisibly at the center of cultural life, she—like Murphy and de Acosta—is now almost completely forgotten.
In All We Know, Lisa Cohen describes these women’s glamorous choices, complicated failures, and controversial personal lives[…]
July also has something for the politically minded. Irresistible Revolution: Confronting Race, Class and the Assumptions of LGBT Politics (Magnus Books) is the long-awaited new book from writer and activist Urvashi Vaid. The book explores “the dilemmas of compromise, assimilation, and ideology that face advocates for LGBT rights through accessible, provocative, and personal perspectives derived from the author’s experience as a leader in this movement. ”
Also this month expect new releases from Jeffrey Luscombe, John Boyne, and a new edited collection from Tristan Taormino.
As always, if we missed an author or book, or if you have a book coming out next month, please email us.
