February 1, 2012
February has arrived and so has an avalanche of winter books. This month you can pick up new releases from Christopher Bram, Sarah Schulman, Peter Cameron, Scotty Bowers, V. K. Powell, and Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore.
- In her new memoir, The Gentrification of the Mind (University of Chicago Press), novelist and playwright Sarah Schulman mixes personal reminiscences with astute cultural analysis. The memoir revisits the height of the AIDS epidemic (1981–1996) in New York City. Schulman recalls “how much of the rebellious queer culture, cheap rents, and a vibrant downtown arts movement vanished almost overnight to be replaced by gay conservative spokespeople and mainstream consumerism.” She details “her experience as a witness to the loss of a generation’s imagination and the consequences of that loss.”
- This month famed writer Peter Cameron releases his long awaited new novel Coral Glynn (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). The publisher blurb states, “When a child’s game goes violently awry in the woods surrounding Hart House, a great shadow—love, perhaps—descends upon its inhabitants…” Sounds haunting and beautiful. And we here at Lambda have a penchant for the haunted and the beautiful.
- If you are in the mood for a dishy tell-all then this is your lucky month. Grove is releasing Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars by Scotty Bowers. Bowers apparently arranged “tricks for LA’s rich and famous. ” He reportedly went to bed with thousands of people and coordinated sexual liaisons for many more. His own sexual partners included “Edith Piaf, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Cary Grant, and the abdicated King of England Edward VIII, and he arranged tricks or otherwise crossed paths with Tennessee Williams, Charles Laughton, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, Noël Coward….” Whew!
As always, if we missed an author or book, or if you have a book coming out next month, please email us.
