Notes from the LGBT literary & publishing community
- The American Library Association (ALA) has presented its first-ever Stonewall Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award for children’s and young adult books of exceptional merit relating to the GLBT experience. The winner: Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher (Delacorte).
- The ALA also singled out four “honor” books for the same award: Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan (Dutton); Love Drugged by James Klise (Flux/Llewellyn); Freaks and Revelations by Davida Willis Hurwin (Little, Brown); and The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams, illustrated by Quentin Blake (Razorbill). - Meanwhile, Room: A Novel (Little, Brown) by out author Emma Donoghue, previously shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, was honored with ALA’s Alex Award as one of the ten best adult books of 2010 that appeal to teen readers. [Source]
- Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation (Seal Press), edited by Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman, took home a Judge’s Special Award at last month’s Publishing Triangle Awards ceremony. Gender Outlaws has the unusual distinction of being a current Lambda Literary Award finalist in two categories: transgender nonfiction and LGBT anthology. - Ron Fritsch’s novel, Promised Valley Rebellion, featuring a gay male protagonist coming of age in prehistoric times, received the first place Gold award for Literary Fiction in the inaugural 2010 eLit Electronic Book Awards. [Source]
- Polaroids: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris (Arsenal Pulp Press), designed by Derek Barnett, has won an Honorable Mention from the Alcuin Society Book Design Awards in the category of Pictorial Books. Polaroids presents some 1,200 full-color Polaroid images taken by Lukacs during two decades of his development as a gay avant-garde artist. [Source]
- As previously announced, the Lambda Literary Foundation has named this year’s recipients of the foundation’s Outstanding Mid-Career Novelists’ Prize: young adult novelist Alex Sanchez (Rainbow Boys) and novelist Susan Stinson (Venus of Chalk).
- Tickets are still available for the 23rd Lambda Literary Awards honoring Edward Albee and Val McDermid, along with all of this year’s Lammy winners and finalists. The gala dinner and awards show, the LLF’s main fund-raising event, will be held on May 26 in NYC. Here’s the link.
